Our History

The Smelsers -
the core of the Border Steel Family
Rex Smelser Sidney MT ~1955.JPG

It all began with in the 1940's with Rex Smelser (pictured far right in Sidney, Montana). Rex was a local businessman that saw value and opportunity in recycling. He passed on his knowledge and exceptional work ethic to his son Bill and grandson, Bret.

Bill and Bret put those skills to work and went on to develop successful careers.

After several years of experience in the steel and recycling industry, Bill and Bret decided to strike out on their own.

In 1985 Border Steel & Recycling was open for business.

In addition to steel and recycling, the pair also bought and sold beef hides.

This pic's a little fuzzy, but this is Bill and Bret in front of stacks of hides.

As the company grew, Bill and Bret bought their first office and scrap yard in Glendive, Montana.

Here's a pic of Bill ~ at work with his early morning cup-o-joe and that good ole Smelser grin.

Border Steel is a family business through and through.

Over the years, many family members have made significant contributions to Border Steel's success.

Two of them are Bret's sons pictured here - Bryon and Brady.

Today, Bret and his brother Tim are at the helm.

Together with the help of other family members and dedicated employees, Border Steel has grown to include 5 store locations in Eastern Montana and Western North Dakota.

Through the years they have stayed true to their values - to serve their customers by providing top quality products and excellent customer service.
